Volume 15 Issue 2 ...February 2001

Message from the president:

Well its’ that time of the month again! I have been in the process of getting wireless Internet service setup at my shop. So far we have a 30-foot antenna mast mounted on the roof. The weather hasn’t really been all that great for this kind of project, but we almost have it completed. Now all we have to do is get our antenna lined up with Globe Surfers omni-directional antenna on the opposite end of town. And we will be some downloading fools!

At this months meeting we will have the guys from Globe Surfer to talk about the WIRELESS Internet. It should prove to be a very informative topic on this slightly new technology that has come to our area.

I have just purchased / built a new PC for myself at the shop. It’s an AMD 750Mhz Athalon with a 20GB hard drive and a 16MB AGP video card. I am now going to attempt to install Windows ME on it in spite of all of the terrible things I have been hearing about it. In fact, one of my customers just came in and gave ME a copy of it. Pardon the pun. He said that he has read to many negative comments about it and no longer wants to mess with it.

I had previously installed ME on another computer, I don’t recall having any problems. I will however soon find out for myself. I do know that the only way to boot up in DOS mode is to make a boot disk and boot it from the A: drive.

Well I hope to see you all at the next meeting, Thursday, February 8th, 2001.

VERY SERIOUS!! New VIRUS

There is a virus out now being sent to people via E-mail. It is considered the A.I.D.S. VIRUS of computers. It will destroy your memory, sound card and speakers, your drive and it will infect your mouse or pointing devices as well as your keyboards, making it so that you can't type and it will not register on the screen. It self-terminates only after it eats 5MB of hard drive space and will delete all programs.

It will come via E-mail called "(OPEN: VERY COOL!:)".DELETE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! Immediately!! It will basically render yourcomputer useless. Very Urgent-Must Read. Please. If you receive an E-mail titled "Win A Holiday" DO NOT open it. It will erase everything on your hard drive. This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it.

SEARCH QUICKLY AND EASILY To do a quick Web search, type Search and the word or phrase in the URL location bar. While this search is not as powerful or exhaustive as one of the big-name search engines, you may find it helpful for performing searches on simple keywords.

SORTING BOOKMARKS WITH SOFTWARE--PART 1 OF 5 Several readers have suggested shareware and freeware programs that can sort Bookmarks and Internet Explorer Favorites. The most popular was Bookmark Converter. Originally intended to convert Bookmarks to Favorites and vice versa, it also sorts them alphabetically in the process. The program is shareware, and costs $8 to register for full functionality. The nonregistered version will convert and sort, but leaves other features such as Auto-Sort On Start-Up crippled until you register. For more information, or to download the program, browse to http://www.magnusbrading.com/bmc/ SORTING BOOKMARKS WITH SOFTWARE--PART 2 OF 5 A close second in the Most Often Suggested Shareware Program category for sorting Bookmarks was Columbine Bookmark Merge. It is "a free utility for merging, editing, sorting, printing, converting, and publishing Netscape Bookmark files, Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) favorites files, NCSA Mosaic Hot List files, or Opera Hot List files." It is technically freeware, but the authors of the program request that if you wish to use it regularly, you make a donation to the Frank J. Cramblitt Memorial Fund for the furtherance of elementary school education. The program's home page lists several known limitations, one of which is that large Bookmark files may take up to several hours to sort. This may not be the right application for everyone, but several Tipworld readers recommend it. For more information or to download, browse to http://www.clark.net/pub/garyc/

SORTING BOOKMARKS WITH SOFTWARE--PART 3 OF 5 Another popular program for sorting Bookmarks is Compass by Danny Liu of Softguage.com. Compass, a well-designed, intuitive Bookmark sorter, makes use of folders and can handle files containing more than 1000 Bookmarks. It is shareware and costs $25 to register. For more information or to download, browse to http://www.softgauge.com/compass/

SORTING BOOKMARKS WITH SOFTWARE--PART 4 OF 5 When I asked readers to help out with their suggestions for sorting Bookmarks, only a few pointed me in the direction of Browse Ability, which should be more popular. This browser-enhancement utility does much more than sort your Bookmarks. It can open multiple Web pages with a single click, save a picture of a Web page along with its URL (this is called a Picmark) for visual identification, and even synchronize Bookmarks between Netscape and MSIE without the cumbersome import-export process. It costs $29.95 to register and appears to be well worth it. For a full list of BrowseAbility's features and to download the program, browse to http://www.melanie-systems.com SORTING BOOKMARKS WITH SOFTWARE--PART 5 OF 5 Our last reader suggestion for sorting Bookmarks involves LinkSweeper, a small program from Left Side Software. LinkSweeper's main function is to go through your Bookmarks and test them to see if they have moved or no longer exist at all. In the process it can also sort your Bookmarks. The program works on both Netscape Bookmarks and MSIE Favorites. The only drawback is that you will lose your separator bars (simple lines that separate one group of Bookmarks from another) in the sorting process. LinkSweeper is freeware; you can download it from http://www.lss.com.au/lss/windows/ls/linksweeper.htm

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -SORTING BOOKMARKS: A SECOND METHOD Today's method for sorting Bookmarks does not involve exporting to or importing from Internet Explorer. You can do everything within Netscape, although it's a bit elaborate. We'll take you step by step, and you'll see that it's not as complicated as it sounds. Start Communicator and click Bookmarks, Edit Bookmarks. Click View, and select By Name, Location, Created On, or Last Visited (By Name is the default). Communicator will sort your Bookmarks according to the option you choose. To make this change permanent, select File, Save As. Name the file bookmark2.htm and click Save. In the Edit Bookmarks window, click File, Open Bookmarks File. Select bookmark2.htm and click Open. Close and restart Netscape. Netscape will load bookmark2.htm, sorted as you selected in step 2. You can also use this Save As method to keep different groups of Bookmarks in separate Bookmark files. You can open or save them at your leisure, and the last file you opened will be the default set of Bookmarks.

NETSCAPE STARTUP RULES "When I click my Netscape icon to get Navigator started, my Inbox comes up and Navigator loads in the background. How do I get just Navigator to load?" You can easily change this in your Netscape preferences. Start Netscape and click Edit, Preferences. On the left side of the Preferences window, select Appearance. Here you can change the Startup rules for Netscape. Under the On Startup Launch option, uncheck everything except Navigator. Click OK to save your changes. Restart Netscape. It should launch only Navigator. You can open your Inbox later as needed..

ECLEANER GETS RID OF HEADERS This is a handy device for people who send and receive a lot of forwarded messages. It suggested using a freeware program called eCleaner. When you want to clean up a message and remove the angle bracket (>) characters and headers from previous forwards, highlight the text of the message and click Edit, Copy. Then run eCleaner. It removes all superfluous text from the message. You can then paste the cleaned message back into a new Netscape Messenger message. For more information or to download eCleaner, browse to http://members.tripod.com/schin26/index.

NOT-SO-BLIND CARBON COPY A reader recently wrote: "To reduce the number of forward e-mail addresses, I have been sending under blind carbon copy (BCC) as undisclosed recipients those addresses to which I send. However, the addresses of all undisclosed recipients are appearing on the e-mail's recipients. What should I do to keep all e-mail addresses off this list?" If you are using only the BCC option, then none of your recipients can see the other addresses--the message will arrive with no recipients listed. Only names listed in the To or CC field appear to all recipients, so if you don't use To or CC, no one can see any addresses. For example, suppose you are sending a message to Tom and a BCC to Dick and Harry. In the To field of your new message, type Tom and press Enter. A new To field appears below the first. Click it and select BCC. Put Dick and Harry as recipients of a BCC. When Tom receives the message, he will see only himself as recipient. When Dick and Harry receive the message, they will see Tom listed as a recipient, but Dick will not know that Harry also received a copy, and vice versa. Furthermore, Tom will not know that you sent any other copies. You can have as many To and BCC fields as you require. If you change all To fields to BCC, none of your recipients will know who else got a copy. This technique not only preserves anonymity, but also gets rid of lengthy lists of recipients at the top of the message.

BLACK AND WHITE AND READ ALL OVER

How in the world do you delete Headers in Communicator Newsgroups? You need to change the way Netscape maintains messages on your disk. Open Messenger and click Edit, Preferences. Expand the Mail & Newsgroups preferences and select Disk Space at the bottom of the expanded list. Netscape cleans up after itself according to the settings in this window. When it's time to clean up, Netscape can: 1) keep messages that arrived in the past X number of days, 2) keep all messages, or 3) keep the newest X number of messages. If you choose the first or last option, input a number appropriate for your needs. Furthermore, putting a check in the box next to Keep Only Unread Messages is also a good idea. When you're done browsing a newsgroup's messages, make sure to mark it read; right-click the group and select Mark Newsgroup Read. If you check the Keep Only Unread Messages option, Netscape will know to delete those messages since you marked them all as read. The messages won't disappear right away, but Netscape will gradually clean up the read messages until none are left. You can also click View, Messages, Unread to filter out messages you've already seen.

BOOKMARKS AS HOME PAGE "How do I get my Bookmarks as my home page?" Start Navigator, click File, Open Page (or press Ctrl-O). In the Open page window, click Choose File. Locate your bookmark.htm file. The default location is C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\[your name] Select bookmark.htm and click Open. Now click Edit, Preferences. Select Navigator in the left side of the window. Click the Use Current Page button in the Home Page options area. Now your Bookmarks are your home page. You can get back to them anytime by clicking the Home button on your toolbar.
