IE ShortcutsLike most programs, Internet Explorer offers shortcuts -- key combinations you can use instead of clicking menus and buttons. In versions 5.0 and 5.5 you can use:* Ctrl+E to open the Search menu.* Ctrl+F to open the Find dialog box.* Ctrl+H to open the History list.* Ctrl+I to open the Favorites list.* Ctrl+N to open a new browser window.* Ctrl+O to type in a remote address.

A NEW MAIL-FILING SYSTEM Today we offer a method for renaming and thereby saving old mail folders without dragging Communicator's performance to a slow crawl. You can use Windows Explorer to rename the files in the Mail folder under Netscape(usuallyc:\programfiles\netscape\users\"profile name"\mail), then store and easily locate them by file name. Netscape will rebuild your mail folders after a restart, so there is little danger of corruption or a crash. NOTE: Before we begin, it is important to recognize that a mail folder within Netscape Messenger is not the same as a folder created on your hard drive. Netscape creates a file ON your hard drive for each folder you have within Messenger. They are merely representations of the way you have mail organized in Messenger. In Messenger, place all the mail you wish to store into a new mail folder called Backup or whatever you prefer. Close all Netscape windows and open Windows Explorer (through your Start Menu). Then locate the Mail folder(c:\programfiles\netscape\users\"profile name"\mail). Within this folder you'll see a new file named for the mail folder you just created in Messenger. Simply right-click it and select Rename. Give it a descriptive name. Furthermore, you should rename the file's corresponding .snm file. You should then create a new folder on your hard drive and place these files into the new folder so you do not later confuse them with other files. Restart Netscape and open Messenger. You should see that you no longer have as many messages taking up valuable system memory while you read and compose mail. Later, when you want to review the messages you have backed up, use Windows Explorer to move the files back to the Mail folder under your profile name. Restart Netscape, and Messenger will recognize the new folder and it will contain your messages.
REMOVING THE VOLUME CONTROL FROM THE SYSTEM TRAY
I've found that because you can use Windows 98's Volume Control only with a mouse, it has a somewhat limited functionality. So instead of monkeying with the Volume Control, I leave it turned up to its maximum level all the time and adjust the volume on my external speakers.
After making this decision, it doesn't make much sense to have the Volume Control sitting in the System Tray. To remove it, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click the Multimedia icon. Click the Audio tab, and in the Playback section, uncheck the Show Volume Control On The Taskbar option. Click OK and the Volume Control icon disappears.

DEAL WITH THE WINDOWS 95/98 MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER
"While it is true that you can't simply delete the My Documents folder without causing problems, many people don't realize that you can rename My Documents without consequences. The system will still recognize it as the default My Documents folder.
"In my case, I renamed My Documents to Janbiz and created all of my data folders in it. Now, with no reassigning on my part, all of my Office applications point to Janbiz, and any new applications I acquire will also default to Janbiz. "By the way, if the folder you want to use as your default already exists, it still might be worthwhile to rename My Documents to that name (renaming the original first, of course), and move the subfolders over, using Windows Explorer. This is what I did in my case, since Janbiz already existed. But it's still worth it to me to know that all new programs will automatically point there."

TRIMMING THE BOOKMARKS Today we offer a way to have Netscape verify each of your bookmarks. Start Netscape and click Bookmarks, Edit Bookmarks. In the Edit Bookmarks window, click View, Update Bookmarks. Netscape will visit each of your bookmarks in turn and verify its existence and whether it's been updated since the last time you visited. If a link no longer exists, Netscape will inform you and mark it so you can delete it at your convenience. If a link has been updated since the last time you visited it, Netscape will mark it as Updated. You can then click it at your leisure and see what wondrous new things that site has in store for you.

PERSONAL TOOLBAR Today's tip is for those users who wish to get more out of their Netscape Personal Toolbar. Typically you use this feature to get quick, single-click access to your favorite sites, but it can do so much more. Using the Edit Bookmarks window, you can create folders on the Personal Toolbar that can contain any number of Bookmarks and subfolders. You can also organize sites on the Toolbar much as you would in the regular Bookmarks list. First, let's make sure the Personal Toolbar is visible. Click View, Show, and make sure you've checked Personal Toolbar. You will see it as a line directly below the Location bar in the main Netscape window. If it is visible but minimized, click the button on the left side to expand it. The toolbar may already have several links on it; if you want to keep them, that's fine, but if you wish to delete them in favor of your own links, click Bookmarks, Edit Bookmarks. In the Edit Bookmarks window, you will see a folder called Personal Toolbar. Select each item in this folder and press the Delete key. Now you can return to the main Netscape window and start adding items to the Toolbar. Go to a site you visit often and drag the Bookmark icon (next to the Location bar) down to the Personal Toolbar. This Bookmarks the site as a link on the Toolbar. Add as many sites as you wish, but remember--too many can become unwieldy. That's where the subfolders come in. Return to the Edit Bookmarks window and right-click the Personal Toolbar folder. Select New Folder and give the folder a name (such as Entertainment, Shopping); do this for as many folders as you think you need. You can organize all the links on the Personal Toolbar by dragging them into the corresponding folder. Using the Edit Bookmarks window, you can add, rename, delete, and remove links on your Personal Toolbar. Experiment with it. Soon you'll become an old pro.

PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED I use Netscape 4.72 and lately almost anything I click on produces this message: 'The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. Please try the following: Click the Refresh button, or try again later. Click the Back button to try another link. Cannot find server or DNS Error' "What is wrong and how do I fix it?" The easiest choice is to take the error at face value. The server you are trying to reach may be down or not responding for some reason. In that case, you may have to do just as it says: try again later. However, the message mentions a DNS error, which usually results from Netscape's inability to reach a domain name server to resolve a name (such as http://www.topica.com) to its 4-to-12-digit IP address. This can result from your computer not being connected to the Internet at the time or from a problem with your provider's DNS. First make sure you are connected to the Internet with a dial-up connection or high-bandwidth connection such as ADSL, ISDN, or cable before you try to visit any sites. If that doesn't appear to be the problem, contact your ISP and make sure all is well with its service. This is not likely a Netscape problem.

Full Screen ViewSmall screens won't fit enough of a Web page. Even a large screen can feel small when you open multiple pages. It helps a little to eliminate unnecessary browser elements, such as the toolbars. In Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5, choose View, Full Screen. (Or just press F11.) Now the entire screen will show the page, without all those pesky menus and whatnot. To get them back, press F11 again or click the Restore button in the upper-right corner
